Tallinn 73

Originally hailing from Tallinn, Estonia the now 10-year fixture of Washington, DC’s underground music scene, Tallinn 73 aka Julius Talvik aka DJ Julius founded his first weekly residency series MOOV in early 1995 (held at the Rasputin Lounge, later moved to Bar Nun). Featuring deep house music, MOOV also hosted a regular drum’n'bass hour at the end of each night and thus provided the first regular venue for jungle madness in the nation’s capital. In the summer of 1996, Step Ahead Recordins boss Aou Pakdee introduced Julius to Eric Hilton of Thievery Corporation (ESL Music), who invited him to establish a weekly residency at the not-yet opened afterhours club Red. What followed is now recited as a seminal “intelligent” drum’n'bass series- The Lab/Soundlab- co-resided with Tyler Askew (Straight No Chaser).

In early 2000 Julius founded the Grooved!strict co-op with partner in crime and long-time associate John Johnson. From the abstract to afro-beat, future funk, broken beat, real jazz and nu jazz, deep house and the new Philly sound, Julius and partners worked the non-4/4 end of the underground musical spectrum to significant critical acclaim, eventually landing on the cover of the Washington Post’s Weekend Entertainment Guide as a “must see in DC”.

Spring 2002 saw Julius making his debut under Umblu Records by the name of Tallinn 73. Together with fellow labelmate Kalm, they issued a full-length spilt-CD Autopiloot, much to critical acclaim, mixing broken beat with obscure jazz and pop samples from 60s. At the moment Julius is working on a solo follow-up to ‘Autopiloot’, due to be released sometime in 2003.
