Autopiloot
“Autopiloot” is a CD that unites two composers/producers who did not know one another at the onset of the recording. This album is a story about “found” sounds.
Tallinn 73 is better known as DJ Julius aka Raul Talvik. He is a dj, arranger and producer of Estonian origin who has lived in Washington, DC for the past 10 years and is a co-founder of Groovedistrict- an event management and pr entity dedicated to all things deep and house. Prior to moving to the United States, Julius lived in Tallinn, Estonia where he was a lead vocalist for a local indie band- The Chance.
Kalm is also known as Kristjan Kalm. He is a native of Tallinn, Estonia and is a composer/producer on his spare time. Kalm was discovered by Radio 2 host Raul Saaremets - aka Ajukaja for Umblu - when he received Kalm’s demo.
Tallinn 73 and Kalm were “introduced” by the executive producer for “Autopiloot” Raul Saaremets when he decided that the resulting collaboration would make for a more interesting and substantial release. The actual in-person meeting of the two took place subsequently.
First and foremost, “Autopiloot” is a story about new discovery in existing (or found) sounds. Tallinn 73 transforms “found” musical bits and re-arranges them for life in the contemporary world. Kalm is very much a musical pathologist by approach. He dissects music down to the core components- notes and beats- and breathes new life into it through his (re)compositions. While this description may sound a tiny bit sterile upon first glance, “Autopiloot” is definitely not a cold, artificial or engineered monstrosity but instead a very unique sort of warm musical fusion.
A result of trans-Atlantic collaboration- “Autopiloot” - features 5 tracks by Kalm and 6 by Tallinn 73. Kalm also performed additional instruments and co-produced 2 of Tallinn 73’s tracks.
Upon listening to this record, everything doesn’t appear to be so complicated anymore.
